A legal tool to foster economic growth in Africa

Setting up of the Foundation for a Unified Business law in Africa / New York, USA / December 1, 2010

It is our pleasure to announce that the inaugural meeting for the creation of the Foundation for a Unified Business Law in Africa took place on December 1, 2010 in New York City. The meeting was hosted by a DRC-based law firm, recently established in New York, EMERY MUKENDI WAFWANA and ASSOCIATES, P.C., 250 Park Avenue, NY 10177.

The purpose of the Foundation is to disseminate OHADA across the United States of America and to organize fundraising in order contribute to the success of the unification process of Business Law throughout Africa, and to the gradual opening up of OHADA to Anglophone countries like GHANA and NIGERIA.

This initiative is heartily and financially supported by UNIDA-Association for a Unified System of Business Laws, US Chapter, OHADA Club USA, New York City, headed by Mr. Jean-Alain PENDA; Mrs. Nady MAYIFUILA, Attorney at the NY Bar, will be the Executive Director of the Foundation.

Mrs. Nady MAYIFUILA will be assisted by Jean-Alain PENDA, as one of the Directors, and Mrs. Kekely KODJO, as the Vice President.

The founding members of the Foundation include: Mr. Olivier ZINSOU, legal consultant, in charge of the fundraising committee; Mrs. Gabriela VIZCAINO, attorney in NYC, Chief Financial officer; Mr. Christopher NYINEVI and Mrs. Francine PREWITT, in charge of the Marketing and Public Relations Committee; and Mr. Felix LENO, Secretary of the Organization, All three LL.M. Students at Fordham University, NYC.

The first concrete actions the Foundation will conduct and UNIDA US Chapter/OHADA Club USA will financially support will be the organization early 2011 of an OHADA Conference at Fordham University and the reprinting in the US of an updated version of the currently sold out OHADA English textbook titled “Unified Business Laws for Africa: Common Law Perspectives on OHADA” and edited by Prof. Claire MOORE DICKERSON.
