Participation of the Permanent Secretary of OHADA at the Philadelphia Conference on International Co-ordination of Law Reforms on Secure Transactions

Conference on International Coordination of Secured Transactions Law Reforms, February 9 – February 10, 2017, in Philadelphia, USA.

The Permanent Secretary of the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa (“OHADA”), Professor Dorothé Cossi SOSSA, accompanied by the Director of Legal Affairs, will be attending a conference on International Coordination of Secured Transactions Law Reforms, which will be held from February 9 to February 10, 2017, in Philadelphia, United States of America.

The conference is organized conjointly by OHADA, the International Insolvency Institute and the National Law Center for Inter-American Free Trade.

Various organizations have managed to produce relevant high quality texts on secured transactions. However, efforts to incorporate these texts into the laws of states have been less successful. There is still work to be done on the harmonization and modernization of secured transactions laws, and the coordination and implementation of domestic secured transactions law with international conventions and other related commercial laws, such as those governing insolvency and leasing.

The conference will be attended by the key players and organizations involved with secured transactions law reform around the world. It will focus on avenues for improving inter-organizational coordination in the development of texts and the implementation of reforms. Speakers will discuss how to address the most pressing challenges in this area.

Representatives of OHADA member states in the United States of America will also attend this important event.

The OHADA Permanent Secretary, Pr. SOSSA will address the conference on February 9 at 2:45pm. He will explain how OHADA uniform Acts are adopted an implemented within its member states. He will also provide an overview of the OHADA uniform Act on security interests as well as of OHADA legal reform projects currently being discussed by the member states.

The conference will provide a unique opportunity to talk about OHADA and discuss its uniform Acts, which have been implemented and are in force in the 17 OHADA member states.

A copy of the English version of the uniform Act on security interests will be distributed to all attendees.
